When our first unix machine arrived, I was assigned a short username (had to be fewer than eight characters). The head UI's at the time (Chuck Garrett and Ben Fried) assigned me the name marg, and it stuck (both as a username and a nickname).
marg is pronounced with a hard "G," just like the beginning of my name, Margarita.
