CP/M Kermit

CP/M Kermit was first written in 1981 Columbia University by Bill Catchings for the Intertec Superbrain and adapted over a span of ten years to other CP/M platforms by the contributors noted below (and also by Digital Equipment Corporation). It was one of the two first Kermit programs, the other being for the DECSYSTEM-20. This page has been modified to refer readers to the Kermit Software Archive for downloading because the traditional method (FTP = Internet File Transfer Protocol) is no longer available. And to add this note.

Kermit software is available for a wide variety of CP/M-80 2.2 and 3.0 systems, as well as CP/M-85, CP/M-86, CP/M-68K, and Concurrent CP/M. Source code is included for all versions. Here is the current list:

As of April-May 2021, the instructions just below for fetching this software no longer work because FTP has been "deprecated" by the Internet, sorry. Instead, go to the Kermit software archive, which is here:
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/fixed/archive.html
and go to the CP/M section, where you can click links to download all the files in a compressed tar Archive or a Zip archive, and you can also look at all the files, one by one. And click on the Manual link to get a very thorough installation and instruction manual in PDF format.

Obsolete instructions...

Use a regular FTP client to retrieve them in text mode. Example:

  $ ftp kermit.columbia.edu
    User: anonymous
    Password: your-email-address
  ftp> cd kermit/a
  ftp> mget
  ftp> ascii
  ftp> get cp*.*
  ftp> bye

CLICK HERE for more information about how to use FTP. The CP/M-80 and CP/M-85 files are all in the kermit/a directory. Get the files cp*.* and then read the cpaaaa.hlp file for further instructions.

The others (CP/M-86, CP/M-68K, Concurrent CP/M-86, etc) are in the kermit/? directory listed in the second column, with the filename prefix listed in the first column. For example, to get the Concurrent CP/M version:

  ftp> cd kermit/c
  ftp> prompt
  ftp> mget cn8*.*

Each version comes as a pair of Intel HEX files (*.hex); the main Kermit program and a system-dependent overlay. Instructions for piecing them together, and for use, are in the documentation:
